Modern Laptops and even desktops does not have any legacy ports like Parallel and Serial Ports and therefore many device programmers cannot be used with them. Add to all these the "dual mode" operation of programmer. The programmer can be used in both traditional programming (ZIF socket based) mode and Modern ICSP mode.

You can program the target chip by placing it in the ZIF socket or Connect the programmer to your target board via ISP cables. In the latter case you don't have to remove the chip each time from the target application for programming. The chip can be programmer right in its target by just connecting it to the programmer.
